Face Spots, Face Skin Age Spots Cover Up Tips

What is the best way to cover-up age spots?

The high tech answer to age spots is to visit your friendly dermatologist and let him or her zap your age spots away with a laser. That's the easiest way to deal with age spots, and you won't have to worry about covering them.

There are creams that fade age spots by the use of bleaching agents, usually some kind of peroxide, but creams take time and persistence, and they may not always do the job you hope they will. Depending on where the age spots are located, you may cover them with your foundation or with a heavier concealer. For hands, backs and other locations, you may want a waterproof, smudgeproof concealer. On your face, you may get by with an extra dot or two of a lighter foundation, followed by your regular color.

oily skin care

What is the best skin care routine for oil skin types?

The best skin care routine for oily skin is to be as gentle as you would if you had paper dry skin. The major mistake many people make with oily skin is in believing that you can beat it into submission with hot water, steam, toners, masks and topicals, when in fact what it truly wants is a little understanding. Oily skin is trying to protect itself from a harsh environment, and making its world even harsher through heat, cold or chemicals, will tend to make it produce more oil than ever.

Wash your face with lukewarm water—never hot and never sold—and a cleanser for oily or even normal skin. Don't scrub or rub, just lave with water, the way you would delicate lingerie. Follow with a light, oil free moisturizer. That's right; your skin needs moisture, as in something water based, preferably with skin soothing components like calendula, aloe vera and lavender oil. If you can find products with significant amounts of green tea extract (look in the first six ingredients), you'll also be doing nice things for your skin cells.

The best makeup for oily skin is mineral makeup, which goes on lightly, can be easily layered for more coverage, minimizes pores, contains no irritants and absorbs oil. It won't clog your pores, and it has a natural SPF, too. At the end of the day, take off your makeup with a lukewarm splash of water and a light cleanser, followed by a toner that contains no alcohol. Alcohol irritates the skin. If you want to make your own toner, use a combination of green tea you steeped yourself and cucumber juice, which you'll want to keep in the fridge. Just make a cup at a time, to keep it fresh.

For blemishes, use straight tea tree oil, preferably at night, so the smell won't bother anyone else. You can buy tea tree oil in dab-on anti-blemish tubes at most drugstores, or just get a bottle of your own and touch it on with your finger. It's a powerful antibacterial, and clears up pimples like nothing else can.

Hand skin softness and care looking young

How can I keep the skin on my hands looking young?

Our great grandmothers knew that to keep hands looking young, one needed several pairs of gloves. Anytime you're even tempted to do housework, don a pair of rubber or vinyl gloves to protect your skin from dust, cleaners and water. If you're gardening, put on your gloves before you even touch your pruning shears. In fact, put on a layer of hand cream and then your gardening gloves, and don't settle for the cotton kind that let the dirt rub through: get some lines ones. At night, before bed, rub on the thickest hand cream you can find (some people use Crisco), and slip on a pair of white cotton gloves. Basically, the more time you spend moisturized and gloved, the less time will affect your hands.

Aside from age itself causing hands to look aged, sun is the major culprit. Lots of women who wouldn't dream of leaving the house without SPF 30 on their faces forget to put it also on their dainty little paws. There's nothing more aging than sunlight, so anytime you get ready to go outside, rub a nice layer of sunscreen on your hands as well as your face and neck.

Hair removal of facial and upper lip (on women)

What are some methods for getting rid of facial and upper lip hair (on women)?

The easiest, if more expensive way to get rid of facial hair is to get an appointment at a laser hair removal clinic and have it zapped away about every six weeks, until the follicles give up and the hair either goes away completely or comes back so fine that it's not worth bothering with. Lasers have the fantastic ability to vaporize hair without messing up the skin around it, although they do work best on people with fair skin and dark hair.

Next in line is probably waxing, where warm wax is applied to the face, then covered with a piece of muslin and pulled out. Again, this is something you'll want to have every four to six weeks. A cycle of a single hair is six weeks, but unfortunately, not all hair is on the same cycle, so there will always be stragglers. You can take care of the odd hair that crops up between laser or waxing appointments with a nice pair of slant tipped tweezers. You can do your own waxing at home: just make sure you get the wax hot enough to spread thinly but not so hot it will burn you, and use a good mirror.

Tweezing is itself a perfectly legitimate way of getting rid of unwanted facial hair, but it has its drawbacks. Tweezing can cause pinpoint scarring, and if the hair is short but noticeable, there may be hair you can see but can't get at for several days, which may drive you a little crazy, especially if you have a big date tonight.

Bleaching is also a good way to deal with facial hair. You can buy cream bleach at the drugstore. Just wipe it on, wait the recommended time, and rinse it off. If you bleach often, say weekly, you'll probably find that some of the hair becomes so thin and fragile that it breaks off, making it even less noticeable.

Concealer and Foundation Usage

How do you use concealer and foundation together?

Put on your foundation, and whatever it doesn't cover can get a layer of concealer. If it still doesn't cover, try a little more foundation on top of the concealer. Let's not be mysterious here: concealer is just a thicker form of foundation. The tricky part is getting coverage without winding up with a big lump of makeup stuck to your face. Powder can be helpful: sometimes, it's easier to start with a layer of powder over the offending spot, then add foundation on top of that. The powder thickens the foundation a bit, giving you a little more coverage.

Concealer can be used differently depending on what you want to conceal. If you're trying to tone down the dark places under your eyes, start with foundation and see how that does. Sometimes, concealer used under the eyes turns you into a raccoon face because it's just too light. Because of the way our faces are built, everyone should have a little shadow under the eyes. So go easy on the makeup, even if you had a hard night. Start instead by trying to reduce the puffiness. Apply a tightening eye cream, or lie down with wet teabags on each eye: the tannins will help reduce the swelling. Then, if you still look like something the cat dragged in, put on a thin layer of foundation.

Eye Brows Grow, Castor Oil

Does castor oil help eyebrows grow? And if not what does?

Nothing helps eyebrows grow. I know, it's a terrible thing to say, but only God can make an eyebrow. Well, actually, eyebrows grow because of hormones that are responsible for hair growth. There are only a few reasons people lack eyebrows: hormone problems; chemotherapy and radiation for cancer treatment, which cause your hair to fall out everywhere; eyebrow related accidents involving gas burners, drunken friends with razors or overplucking. If you have the money and your eyebrows are irretrievable due to hormones or cancer treatments, you can have them replaced by a cosmetic surgeon, which can transplant hair from your head to where it should be on your eyebrows. This isn't a quick fix: it takes months for the new hair to come in and grow. On the other hand, it's permanent. On yet the other hand, it costs thousands.

If your eyebrows are just very thin or very pale, you don't need them to grow: you just need a little makeup. Use eyebrow pencil to darken your brows, and even add a stroke or two where there is no hair—if you do it delicately, no one will be able to tell. Thinner eyebrows are usually in fashion, so don't fret about them anymore: just get a good eye pencil in the right color for your face, and use it every day.

If your brows are gone because of overplucking or shaving, the best you can do is wait. Hair grows in six week cycles, and eventually yours will grow back. Use an eye pencil until that happy day, and if you're really looking strange, just tell everyone the story of how you lost your eyebrows. It won't make your face look any better, but you will earn tremendous points in being considered a good sport and a true raconteur. Anyone can grow an eyebrow: who among us can tell a really great story?

What is the best oil for massaging skin?

What is the best oil for massaging skin?

There are all sorts of lovely massage oils. One favorite is sweet almond oil, although people with nut allergies should avoid it. Avocado oil is also considered delicious when rubbed between the shoulder blades. Sunflower oil, olive oil, even canola are fine for massage; just add a few drops of a favorite essential oils (sandalwood, patchouli, lavender) for a terrific scent.

Any vegetable oil is good for massage, but I don't recommend a highly scented olive oil, unless you want to smell like a salad.

What is the best oil for massaging hair?

What is the best oil for massaging hair?

Coconut oil has long been used in India and the South Seas for keeping hair soft and shiny. It has the added benefit of a lovely natural scent, that can remind you of Hawaii without the added expense of plane tickets. You can also use sesame or olive oil to massage the head and hair.

Massage for hair is generally a conditioning activity: you're applying oil to the hair and rubbing it in. it does make the hair softer, but even better, it tends to be relaxing to the scalp and neck. Having your head rubbed makes many people feel the way they did when they were babies. Once we're children, our parents forget to rub our heads, but when we're infants, they smooth our hair, pat us, and nestle us against them. Rubbing someone's head can be soothing, calming and loving.

Rubbing someone's head with scented oil can be downright erogenous. Use the oil warmed, and add rosemary or other essential oils to the base vegetable oil.

Can you explain why waxing your eyebrows can sometimes cause bruising?

Can you explain why waxing your eyebrows can sometimes cause bruising?

If you wax and then rewax the same place right away because you didn't get it all the first time, you may bruise the skin. Also, not holding the skin taut when pulling off the wax strip can pull that delicate skin out and bruise it like that.

Only wax an area once: if you don't get all the hair off, wait a few hours before trying it again. Don't pull the waxed strip off without supporting the underlying skin with the other hand: aside from bruising, you may get bleeding and an incomplete wax.

What is a homemade remedy for beautiful hands?

What is a homemade remedy for beautiful hands?

Keeping your hands beautiful hinges on protecting them, moisturizing them and keeping them neat. Protect your hands by wearing gloves any time you're using your hands for housework, art, gardening or home repairs. Protect them out of gloves with moisturizer, and avoid harsh chemicals, including the ones often used on nails such as polish, hardeners and polish removers. Protect them from aging by using sunscreen whenever you go outside—rub it thoroughly into your hands. Protect your cuticles from scissors-crazed manicurists who want to cut them: they should never be cut or trimmed.

Keep your hands moisturized by applying lotion morning and night, and once or twice a week put on a serious hand cream and sleep with cotton gloves covering it.

Keep your hands looking neat by pushing back the cuticles gently, so your half moons aren't covered. File your nails whenever they get ragged and try to keep them in a smooth, oval shape that's not too long, which can look tacky. Buff your nails to a shine while watching TV: you can rub some Vitamin E into them at the same time for added shine.

Trying Free or Discount Perfume Samples Before You Purchase

Trying Free or Discount Perfume Samples Before You Purchase

When perfume shopping, don’t spray on the first thing you see, and don’t let anyone spray a tester on you at the entrance to the perfume counter. Smell the tester by spraying it on a slip of paper, and use this first test to rule out fragrances that don’t appeal to you. Chances are, if you don’t like it on the paper, putting it on your skin won’t increase your enjoyment of it.

Proper sampling of free or inexpensive perfume sampler vials.

Once you’ve found some scents that appeal to you on paper, ask a sales clerk if there are samples you can take home to try. Many perfume companies put out little one-time use packages either in paper or tiny glass vials. This is the best way to try a perfume, since you can get away from the varied aromas of the perfume counter and department store and find out what the fragrance will smell like on you without any other distractions. It doesn’t make sense to purchase a perfume without testing it on your body, since your unique chemistry will work with the perfume oils to create the scent that is finally yours. For this reason, when you borrow your best friend’s perfume, while it may smell marvelous on her, it may as easily smell like baby powder or bug spray when combined with your individual pheromones. Finding your fragrance is a personal journey: enjoy the process.

When you test a scent, take the opportunity to evaluate it in three ways. You should like the way it smells when you first apply it: that’s when it is strongest, but it’s also when the alcohol in it contributes its unique smell before evaporating. After the scent has been on for around fifteen minutes, sniff it again. The alcohol scent will be gone, but the top notes will still be strong. This is when your perfume may smell sweetest, as the top notes of most fragrances tend to be florals and herbals. After several hours, the top notes will fade, and the heart and bottom or “base” notes will make their presence felt. Many newer perfumes targeted to the younger set don’t really have base notes: they rely on the alcohol rush and a heavy dose of bright florals, but tend to fade to a single scent after an hour or two. Classic perfumes operate on the principle that perfumes are like people—the more you get to know them, the deeper you will find them to be. Well-balanced fragrances will maintain a portion of the top-note floral or citrus blend while the heart notes (oak moss and sandalwood are two favorites) provide a steady scent that fades slowly.

Perfume base notes.

Musk, pepper, cinnamon or incense to name a few—add richness and body to the overall scent. Many people may not be aware of base notes because they are subtle and dark, but you can certainly tell when they are missing—perfumes without them lack depth and interest.

Do you love your perfume selection?

Whatever perfume you decide to make your own, you should feel happy and excited about its scent from the first spray in the morning to the hint of it lingering on your wrist at night. Perfume, more than any other fashion-related product is about pleasing yourself first. You may choose one perfume and wear it all your life, or create a fragrance wardrobe, wearing any scent that suits your mood and the occasion. Fragrance, like beauty is utterly individual, an expression of your deepest self.

Find Your Fragrance Personality

Find Your Fragrance Personality

Before Choosing a New Perfume

When you choose a perfume, you are expressing something about the way you want to see yourself or your "fragrance personality". Do you want to feel fresh and clean? Exotic and energetic? Youthful or woman-of-the-world? You’d think it would be an easy thing to find a new perfume—just pick the scents you like, right? Sure, that’s where you should start, and you should also make an effort to consider scents you dislike. Fragrance researchers have found that many people find the scent of lavender calming, because it reminds them of earlier times and their grandmother’s linen closet. But we are all individuals, and someone who was made to stand in the linen closet until she ate all her broccoli may not find the scent of lavender pleasant at all. On the other hand, the scent of tobacco is attractive to many people, and has found its way into dozens of men’s colognes and a significant of women’s perfumes, often characterized as having a leathery-woody-spicy-tabac scent.

Take your time perfume shopping before you buy a perfume fragrance.

Perfume shopping isn’t something you can do in a single day, because after a few sprays at the samples counter, the sensors in your nose shut off and either you can’t smell the perfumes you’re trying on, or they blend and create a perfume that doesn’t really exist. At that point, you may find yourself coming home with something that turns out to smelling completely different from the way it did in the store. The fragrance didn’t change during the car ride home: after a half-hour or so of not being exposed to fragrances, your nose just started working again!

Take lots of breaks when shopping for perfume. Whenever possible, start with lighter scents, so your nose won’t be overpowered early on. If you’re looking for something rich and heady, test one or two fragrances, wander off to shop for something else or grab a cup of coffee, and return in 20 minutes or more to try a couple more.

Read the perfume information before you buy.

You can sometimes find lighter scents by reading the descriptions on the packaging: packaging is often colored to reflect the overall tone of the scent, so that you will often find fruity scents in bright packages, rich, complex ones in deep reds or browns, and light florals in pastel colors. It’s not always a sure thing, though: some perfumes made for the ‘teens and ‘tweens are heavy with sweet, aqueous scents and florals, often boosted with high-potency citrus. You’ll find them in blues and greens, metallic-finished bottles and high-tech looking packages.

Clear your sense of smell.

Like all our senses, after being exposed to stimuli for awhile, our olfactory senses “habituate”, shutting down to pervasive or continuing aromas or odors. Sensors can be recalled to duty by “palate cleansing”, or by taking a break. Fragrance boutiques that specialize in scented oils often leave saucers of coffee beans around so you can get a little more mileage out of your scent sensors. In the way that a wine taster takes a bite or two of bread between tastings, sniffing the coffee beans refreshes your sense of smell and lets you sniff a few more scents before your nose gives out. If you aren’t sure what you’re looking for, you might save some time by talking to the salesperson about scents you like and asking for help finding a perfume that combines

Applying Your Favorite Perfume or Fragrance

Applying Your Favorite Perfume or Fragrance

To apply the perfect amount of scent, put it on when you are just out of the shower and before dressing. Dab perfume on pulse points (no more than six if you’re applying it on the backs of knees or ankles) or three sprays of eau de toilette or eau de parfum right after drying off. The scent will become a part of your skin, easing through your clothing rather than sitting on top of it. Scenting before dressing also prevents sprays from staining or fading clothing.

Layering Fragrances for Enhance Perfume Scent

Perfumers have always warned against warring fragrances. If you are going to wear a perfume, they say, it should be layered—powder, lotion and cologne should all be the same perfume to avoid olfactory clashes. If you want to wear the same scent you’ve always worn but worry that it may cause you trouble at work or in public, you may decide to lighten it by wearing eau de toilette instead of perfume, or you may choose a scented bath gel, body lotion or powder instead and keep the spray or dab-on scent for wearing on special occasions.

The traditional stance on perfumes has been that each woman finds her “signature” scent and it becomes part of personality, scenting her closet, her lingerie and her handbag. Women have often chosen the same perfume their mothers wore, making it part of a family tradition. New thoughts on perfumery encourage women to make more than one scent part of their “signature”. Single note perfumes such as rose, orange, blossom, amber or jasmine are often sold in order to give women the chance to acquire a scent wardrobe to match the mood of any particular day or event.

Types of Perfumes and Fragrance Categories

Types of Perfumes and Fragrance Categories

Perfume has always been a vital part of human culture: people have perfumed their hair and bodies with oils, resins, flower and herb extracts and animal scents since earliest history. Wearing scent is pleasurable; it is an expression of individuality; it attracts mates and makes us nice to be close to. Perfumes are more for the wearer: they make us feel wonderful.

Fragrances are classed—and priced—by their alcohol content, with the least expensive being eau de toilettes and eau de colognes containing between 3% and 8% fragrance with the other 92-97% of the content being made up of alcohol, water and color. Eau de parfum contains actual perfume oils of 8-15%. You pay more for perfume because it is stronger at application and lasts longer than eau de toilette. Perfume (or “parfum”) contains somewhere between 15% and 30% of perfume oils and lasts longer than other scent types—typically around six hours. Always try to take a sample of perfume home to try for a week or two and make sure it is the right fragrance and strength for you before buying.

Fragrance Blending Families

Fragrances may be floral, spicy, woody, herbal, musky, powdery (also called “chypre”) or “aqueous” a recent designation for aromatherapy scents that are based more on a concept of a “watery” smell than an actual scent. The recent rediscovery of herbal and floral scents combined with recent technology for scent capture has created new markets for subtle extracts—“headspace” scents extracted through the use of gas chromatography, creating entirely new classes of perfumes. Food scents such as vanilla, chocolate, cherry and coffee have made their way into perfumery to the chagrin of many classical perfumers and to the happiness of younger customers who like fruity, foody, unsophisticated scents. Many perfumes combine the scent categories, creating combinations such as “Oriental” which is usually identified by heavy florals and spices. Aldehydes, which made their debut with the heady scent of Chanel No. 5, are pure chemicals whose particular odors are named by letters rather than names. Aldehydes, while completely man-made are also compelling and immensely popular, making up many of the elegant perfumes of today.

History and Origins of Perfume, Fragrance and Cologne.

History and Origins of Perfume, Fragrance and Cologne.

When the Emperor Napoleon of France was about to return from battle, he sent a message to Josephine. “Am returning in three days. Don’t wash.” While modern-day noses may not agree with Napoleon’s sentiments, there is some evidence that lovers are attracted by each others’ natural smell above and beyond the scents of soap, perfume, fragrance, cologne and chewing gum. That we are influenced by naturally-emitted scents called pheromones, so subtle and yet so powerful that we can be drawn to or repelled by people for reasons we don’t even understand. (History doesn’t record whether or not Josephine obeyed Napoleon’s order.)

Olfactory research has shown that certain odors can prevent shoplifting, inspire confidences and make us hungry even when our stomachs are full. The perception of fragrance is embedded in the portion of our brains where emotions arise, making smells from childhood immediate memory triggers, and creating a strong emotional pull towards or away from smells depending on the positive or negative associations of the memories they are attached to.

Choosing a perfume is like choosing a lover: you don’t rush; you learn everything you can; you take your own feelings seriously. With an eye to these requirements, the aim of this article is to teach you about the types of fragrance, the fragrance families, the right ways to wear perfume, and how to shop for the perfect perfume.

Beautify Your Pet with Proper Grooming and Health Care

Beautify Your Pet with Proper Grooming and Health Care

Guys know that puppies are “chick magnets”, and although O’Henry once wrote a story that concluded that men who love dogs hated women, I’m inclined to think well of men who have the responsibility and commitment to take care of an animal. I’m frankly prejudiced, believing that most people who have pets are probably a bit nicer than people who don’t. That’s assuming pets are well-cared for, of course. There are fewer things sadder than a pet who hasn’t been taken care of properly, unless maybe it’s a pet who’s been so cosseted that it bites, destroys things, goes in the house and gets away with mayhem because, “It’s widdle wee one wooves its Mommy!”

So I thought that today, I would write about ways to make your pet more beautiful than ever before without expensive trips to the Doggie Spa.

Your Pet's Health

Like people, animals tend to look better when they’re in good heath. Annual checkups at the vet are important, and keeping nails trimmed helps dogs and cats maintain the health of their feet and pads. Especially with cats, trimming nails on a regular basis is important not only to keep nails from splitting and tearing, but because it keeps your cat from forgetting what its like to have a Pawdicure. If you clip your cat’s nails once a month and make it part of a regular routine, the cat will struggle less than if you only do it once in awhile.

Inadequacies in diet can show up in your pet’s fur. Healthy fur is glossy or fluffy, thick and filled-in. When cats or dogs aren’t getting the nutrition they need, their fur may get patchy, rough or dull. Stress can also cause an animal’s fur to fall out.

If you suspect that your pet’s diet may not be all it should, you can try switching foods, or supplement the regular food with vitamins. Don’t rely on treats to provide added nutrition: many treats are the canine-feline equivalent of a bag of Cheetohs.

Anti-flea and tick medications as well as heartworm prevention are necessary for keeping pets healthy. Modern medicines like Advantage can be administered once a month, making it easy to keep your pet safe from parasites.

How to Groom Your Pet on a Budget

Did you know that taking your pet to a professional grooming service can cost you $50 to $100 each time? Not to mention the groomers can put a signifigant amount of stress on your furry friend. You can actually purchase the exact same products the groomer uses to beautify your pet at a fraction of the cost.

Sure, sure . . .grooming your pet yourself will take a little bit of elbow grease and time, but your pet will love spending the extra time with you. Plus you won't have to break your monthly budget, just so your dog doesn't smell when you have guests over.

See a selection of pet grooming products that are available to pet owners and used by professional pet groomers.

Grooming and Pet Hair Care

Like hair-brushing for people, regular grooming can help cats and dogs look their best. Brushing distributes natural oils, removes knots and tangles, and also gives your pet some additional, loving contact. Ideally, brush your pets every day, making sure to be on the lookout for ticks or fleas. Even with one-weekly brushing, you’ll see a difference in their coats. Additionally, brushing cats and dogs helps keep the fur-shedding down, resulting in a slightly cleaner house and a less frumpy animal.

If you start bathing your puppy while he’s young, you’ll have a better chance of teaching him that bathing is fun, not torture. A few dogs never get to enjoying a bath, but most dogs love water and will tolerate a certain amount of shampoo. Some dogs love to be bathed, which makes it an easy chore. Outdoor dogs need bathing more often than indoor dogs.

After bathing with a gentle pet shampoo, dry your dog as well as you can with a fluffy towel, and, for a more efficient drying, let him shake the water off several times. If it’s cold outside, keep him inside until he’s dry: dogs and cats can get chilled and sick just like people do. Besides, if he goes outside, he’s likely to roll in dirt to get back that outdoors-doggie smell the bath removed, and you may as well have never bathed him in the first place.

Cats shouldn’t be bathed unless unusual circumstances that result in a really, intolerably filthy cat. Even then, expect to be scratched and bitten, and for the bathing to last under ten seconds.

I’ve had good luck sponge-bathing a cat. Wet a sponge (don’t use any soap, or it’ll end up in the cat’s mouth), wring it mostly dry, and rub the cat down as if you’re just petting her. Some cats really like this: maybe it reminds them of being bathed by their mothers. The key is a mostly dry sponge: if it’s too wet, the cat will clue in, and run off. But it works pretty well: for a grubby cat, just keep wringing out the sponge in clean water. Also, it’s easier to follow the cat around the house than it is to get her to stay still while you rinse a sponge.

If Your Pet is Outdoors

Watch out for your outdoor pets’ paw pads in cold or hot weather. Paws can become frostbitten or burned just like feet can. In cold weather, your short-haired dog may need a small wardrobe to keep him warm. Dogs shiver when they’re cold, just like people do. Cats tend to find the warmest pace they can and curl up for warmth. You don’t have to buy special doggie clothes: a sweatshirt can keep your dog warm without diminishing his dignity too much.

In hot weather or cold, all animals need access to water and shelter. When it’s really hot, I have a friend who uses a cool-water sponge bath to cool her cat. When the temperatures rise past 80 degrees, she sponges her Siamese down a couple of times a day. She claims is has a definite effect on his temperament: hot weather makes him cranky.

Maintaining Your Pet's Eyes, Ears and Nose

Keeping your pet good-looking may require a little bit of nursemaiding. Wipe your cat’s or dog’s face with his own washcloth or a damp paper towel remove the little, crusty, nasty bits that sometimes cling to your pet’s eyes or nose. Clean the outside of his ears, but don’t ever poke around on the inside: your pet can’t tell you what’s going on and you might get (deservedly) bitten.

Storage solutions and organization tips from professionals for messy closets, clutter kitchens and unorganized homes.
Especially in cities or school dormitories, the upkeep of your wardrobe depends greatly on the available storage space. If you watch HGTV, you've probably seen the folks who end up keeping their shoes atop the kitchen cabinets, and entire families whose basements are buried in the accumulated toys, books, clothes, bedding and furniture of the modern consumer age.But that's them, and this is you. Even if you live in a shoe box-sized apartment, there are things you can do to maximize your closet space and put your stuff away.

I know a couple of women who went to graduate school together. One lived in the dorms, the other had the world's smallest studio apartment. It was built literally in the space between two stairwells in an old house that had been broken into 13 apartments. She could hear her neighbors coming and going at all hours, and sometimes opened her front door to let her neighbors' visitors pass through her apartment's back door (eight feet away) to the back stairwell, which couldn't be reached from inside the house any other way.

She had a terrible time in the place, because she wasn't the most organized human being, and her books and papers tended to become strewn about the place in a clutter mess. The open wire shelving unit above the bed were usually draped with half-unfolded clothes, and once she sprained her ankle by skidding across a layer of school papers when trying to answer the phone.

When the dorm-dweller saw the tiny place, her eyes lit up, and two years later, when her friend moved, she took the apartment. She lived there for four years, until she married and moved into a bigger place, and she still sighs for her tiny, perfect jewel of an apartment.

The difference between these two students was one of character. One was a highly organized person with a great sense of order and the design sense to take advantage of what little space was available to her with special bins, boxes, and other storage containers. The other student was hopeless, and needed lots of room to find things. It didn't occur to her to use extra shelving units bolted to the walls, or to organize her books and papers in magazine racks. Her organized friend, on the other hand, made perfect use of the apartment.

Home Organization and Storage

One of the most underrated pieces of storage furniture is the captain's bed. Built ship-style, this bed has drawers underneath that pull out for storage. It's a brilliant use of space because the usual bed is up off the floor, with nothing but flip-flops and dust puppies underneath it.

Entire shelving systems can be created to fit alongside walls or in under-utilized areas. Closed shelves look neater than open ones, but both have their place. Things that get frequent use, like kitchen spices or coffee canisters, should be kept in the open for easy access. Winter bedding and sweaters can go on high, closed shelves in summer, and come down to open closet areas when they're needed.

Large armoires or cabinets can take up a lot more space than they return to you in storage. If you want a grand piece of furniture to hide a few things in, that's fine. But if you want to spend fifty bucks instead of five hundred, and you're looking for serious storage, open wire shelves, bracket shelves and free-standing fabric-walled closets may be more what you're looking for.

The right coat-hangers can maximize the space in your closets by hanging more than one item neatly in such a way that you can still find everything you need without having to dig through the bottom of the closet.

Kitchen Organization and Storage

Sometimes, great big appliances aren't the best choices for small spaces. If you're not a big fan of cooking, a slightly-larger than dorm-sized fridge can hold enough beverages and apples to keep you nourished in between trips for take-out. Hot-plates can be very useful for boiling water and cooking all sorts of stove-top delights, and can be crammed into a drawer when you aren't using them. Before there were microwave meals, I had a friend who lived in one room for a year, and learned to bake fresh sourdough rolls in her microwave. (It takes 4 hours to make the dough and let it rise twice, and about 42 seconds to actually bake it.) She wasn't much interested in the domestic arts, so besides that, she ate a lot of Cheetohs and Diet Coke. (Someone once convinced her that you could roast a chicken in a paper bag in the microwave, and against her better judgment, she tried it. It was, of course, inedible.)

A second note about appliances: some of them are just stupid and wasteful. One example would be the potato peeler that works by shoving the tuber onto a spindle and cranking off a thin, winding coil of potato. Cheap ice cream makers don't work either: first, you have to keep the gel-insulated bowl in your freezer so it'll be as cold as possible when you get ready to use it. Then, you have to chill your ice cream mixture for hours in the fridge, then place in the bowl which the goes into the machine. The machine turns the mix, and while it does start to get icy, it doesn't actually freeze until you stop the machine and return the soft serve to the freezer for another couple of hours. The lesson is this" if you must have an ice-cream maker, get the kind that has its own built-in freezer. It costs a lot more, but you'll actually end up with ice cream. (And my personal favorite is the really old-fashioned freezer, which was a cedar bucket with a metal canister inside and a crank that you turned. When you aren't making ice cream, which is most of the time, the bucket sits by the door with dried flowers in it, looking picturesque.)

Now, this is radical, and I may get complaints, but I really, truly believe that the bread machine is a silly appliance. It can only do one thing, it takes up a lot of space, it's hard to clean, and the bread has a hole in it. My bread machine is a bowl.

For my money, the finest all-round appliance is the waffle iron. Nothing else in the world can make a waffle. But, also wonderful is the fact that you can make the best grilled-cheese sandwiches ever in a waffle iron. You can also grill chicken breasts or vegetables, or anything else that isn't too greasy. You can make your own ice-cream cones, too! An added plus: modern-day non-stick surfaces make waffles irons a breeze to keep clean. (But the vintage ones are extremely good-looking, and you can always buy non-stick spray).

The best appliances can do more than one thing, are easy to clean, and don't take up much space. One more example: you can make daiquiris in a good food processor, but it's harder to chop foods evenly in a blender.

Keeping an Organized Home Maintained

Organization is largely a matter of scheduling periodic maintenance. Some places in your house (e.g., the coffee table in the living-room) need to be de-cluttered daily. Kitchen food cupboards can be rearranged when you bring home new groceries. One way of keeping control of the fridge is to throw something away every day until the smell is gone. (I've heard that some people actually clean the fridge at regular intervals: I suppose you could do it that way.)

We all now have so much stuff, that it becomes difficult to control its spread. I heard that the word "dungeon" came from an ancient word meaning "to forget". I wonder if today's basements are merely modern dungeons for stuff. Proper lighting helps you organize a space, because what you can't see, you tend to forget. You can buy all sorts of lamps or even have pot lights wired into closest and cupboards to help keep you abreast of what's living in those spaces. Even a little fluorescent fixture on a nail can help you keep the basement organized, because you can see what's in there.

Make your Tiny Space Feel Comfortable, Organized and Expertly Decorated

Apartment living can be rough on someone who's used to living in the country. The sound of cars and buses rolling by at all hours, noisy upstairs neighbors, car alarms and various city sounds can make it hard to sleep, difficult to relax. Maybe lifetime apartment-dwellers feel the same stress, but aren't aware of the difference between

country and city life. For both kinds of people, making home a haven of serenity is an issue important to health and harmony. It's not easy to relax in a crowded room, but in apartment living, space is often at a premium. Here are some tips for generating a peaceful feeling in your home wherever you may dwell.

Organization 101: Storage Containers that Add to Your Home Décor

Organizing your home or office is an ongoing process, and experts like Steven Covey suggest that you take time at the end of each day to reorganize your desk, making it easy to find things and get to work the next morning. One of the tricks of organizing is putting things where you can find them again, without having them cluttering up the landscape and getting in the way. File cabinets are perfect for organizing papers by date, alphabet or subject because they make paperwork vertical and simple to page through. Transparent boxes can hold craft items, making it easy to find what you want without rummaging around. Closets contain clothes, but bulky things like sweaters might take up less space stored in boxes. Whatever storage options you choose, you're in luck, because modern storage can be pretty and functional. You don't have to buy cheesy cardboard boxes: the new bright acrylics are more durable and much more decorative!

Clearing and Organizing Clutter Make Small Spaces Seem Larger

One mistake many people make is in thinking that cleaning doesn't count unless it's thorough and completely organized. There's a lot to be said for hiding mess until you have time to deal with it: there's no reason to punish yourself by living in clutter until you can clean it all up! It's surprising how much more open a room can look when the horizontal surfaces are cleared off, even temporarily. One solution to cluttered coffee and dining tables is to place baskets under each table, and sweep the clutter into the basket once a day. On the weekend, sort through the basket, discard magazines and junk, put books back in shelves. When Monday rolls around, start over!

Go Vertical with Apartment Storage Solutions

Things look better in stacks. If you don't have time to put things away but still need to make a room presentable, simply stacking books and papers, stacking large to small, from bottom to top, can clear horizontal space fast. Choose narrower bookshelves that reach high up the wall rather than wide ones that spread across the floor to maximize open space. Mount speakers to the wall rather than setting them on the floor. Hang pots and pans, towels and clocks on walls.

Hide Unwanted Clutter in a Blanket Box

One of the best investments you can make is in a blanket box. Larger than the usual cedar chest, a blanket box comes with a lid, making it possible to stash 45 square feet of books, papers, tools, dishes, yes, even blankets in a tidy, contained space about 5 feet long by three feet wide and deep. Make it a rule: when the lid can't be easily closed, it's time to sort and either reorganize or throw things out.

If you have a choice between open and closed shelves or cabinets, choose closed ones. That way you don't have to look at disorganized shelves and neither does anyone else. Keep closet doors shut and put things in drawers as you move through your rooms.

Multi-Task Your Apartment Clutter Clean-up

You can sort through a hatbox of toiletries while watching TV, hang up laundry during commercials, fill or empty the dishwasher when you stand up from the computer to stretch. Accomplishing little bits of housework can feel less onerous when you do it in the middle of doing something else.

Keep at Least one Horizontal Surface Totally Clean

It does a lot for your mental state to rest your eyes on a surface that's completely free and empty. It's always tempting to put art objects or knick-knacks on the mantel, but resist the impulse. Choose one area in each room and keep it totally cleared off. It's sort of an affirmation, a way of saying, "I can do this: I can control my space." An open space rests the mind and stimulates creativity.

Replace "Stuff" (i.e. Clutter or Too Many Decorations) with Plants

Plants are natural air purifiers. They provide visual interest, and add a shot of color and fragrance for a minimal investment of time and effort. Bulbs are great for growing indoors. Many are shade-tolerant, and they come in an endless variety of colors. This year, my friends who have a blueberry-milkshake colored living-room announced their plan to include blue and purple flowers inside the room. Hyacinths and iris come in wonderful shades of blue, lavender and deep purple. My personal favorite are the DeCaen anemones for sale at www.dutchgardens.com. They come in red and pink, but the blue are silky, deep and luscious, with a shiny black center.

The other plus side of using bulbs is that you can grow them any time of year. You can force bulbs to bloom out of season by refrigerating them for a couple of months, then bringing them out into the world where they will experience spring, created by you!

The Beauty Of Your Home

The Beauty Of Your Home

Your home is an expression of your taste, and can serve to express your inner beauty while magnifying your outer beauty too. Just as the right lighting choices impact your overall quality of life, the right colors in your home can affect your mood, your relationships, your concentration and your indoor complexion.

I was watching one of those HGTV shows the other night, and was intrigued by how the designer started with a fairly hideous loft and created something that seem an exact fit with the personality of the man who had bought it. He was a pretty macho guy, and wanted things to look "masculine": living in a purple painted loft had nearly done in his sense of self.

Fortunately, this particular guy was also a lawyer, so the designer had heaps of money to work with – always a plus. But what she did surprised me. She painted one of the walls to look like it was made of leather. She brought in some leather furniture and mixed it up with an antique Chinese cabinet, a fabulous mahogany table, and some custom-built cabinetry, and created a modern take on the old-fashioned men’s smoking club. It was extremely elegant.

Easy Re-painting for Any Beginner Do It Yourselfer

Once you've painted a room, it's bound to suffer a scratch. There's something about newly-dried paint that seems to draw nicks from passing cutlery, dings from table edges or the stains from grubby little hands. But fixing paint is a hassle—either you used it all up and can't ever hope to match the shade again, or you know the can is somewhere in the basement but can't find the time to hunt it down. And since painting means clean-up, most of us would rather just try to ignore the scratches and get on with our lives.

It would be so nice to be able to repaint easily, whenever one of life's little catastrophes puts another mark on the wall! We found a product that makes it easy. It's small enough to store under the sink, and comes with a built in brush. Just fill it with paint and put it away until you need it. It's airtight, so it won't dry out, and it's all ready to use and reuse. The Touch up Paint Kit: Why didn't anyone think of it before?

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

There’s no law that says your house should look like other peoples’ houses. Your home can fulfill its practical purpose while feeding your artistic soul. And you don’t have to have Chinese antiques to match your surroundings to your own sense of self. Your place should first make you feel glad to be there. It should be comfortable and comforting. Secondly, it can express your personal sense of style; and it’s a great way to experiment with your dramatic, playful side.

My friends had to paint their living-room because they ceiling was falling in on their heads due to earthquake activity in their (rented) Oakland house. It totally depressed them to see the cracks in the ceiling and the peeling paint extending down the walls. So much so, that they took two weeks out of their summer to re-plaster (and sand, and sand, and sand) and finally, to paint the room, which included a fourteen-foot ceiling, an arch, crown molding and a deep cove. It was a huge task!

They could have painted the room the same off-white it had always been, but after putting in all that work, they didn’t want to end up staring at a white room. So they went to the paint store and picked out chips in their favorite fantasy colors. (The idea was, "If we hate it, we’ll repaint it!) After lots of discussion and weeding-out, they realized that what they wanted to express was cheerfulness, optimism, lighthearted feelings. They chose an ultra-pale blue-lavender tint that one of their friends dubbed "blueberry milkshake". That opened the flood gates, and they painted the cove a rich, royal blue, and used a mulberry-colored enamel on the crown molding.

That was two years ago, and they’ve had nothing but compliments since. But the really wonderful thing is, to this day, they both say that being in the room makes them feel happy. My point: they used a practical need to create something beyond practical, even spiritual.

Painting is a great way to fit your environment to your inner beauty. You can be sedate, elegant, silly or wild, just by using particular colors and paying attention to light. Paint is available in every color you can imagine, and the new paints have nearly no smell at all. If you open a can of paint and find you don't like the smell, add a couple of teaspoons of vanilla flavoring to the paint and stir it in thoroughly. Sweet!

People are afraid to paint, and I'm not sure why. Paint is a thousand times simpler than wallpaper, and much better than just living with ugly walls. I can probably give you enough tips right here to make painting a breeze.

1. Beige is for the fearful. Red can cause familial disharmony and should be used only sparingly. Blues and greens feel cool, serene. Yellow is cheerful . Don't be afraid of colors. Don't waste your life painting walls beige.

2. Colors get darker once you put them on the wall. It's not because the colors actually darken: it's because, the more color that gets on the wall, the more reflected light affects the color of the other walls. The lesson here is to pick a shade somewhat lighter than you think you'll want. Start by choosing paint chips one, two and three shades lighter than your desired shade. Paint a foot-square patch of each on the wall, and compare their shades before moving on. Paint half a wall, then take a good, hard look at it and try to imagine how much darker it's going to get as you go along.

3. Before painting, overprepare. The reason many people have problems with painting is that they don't spend enough time preparing the space. Walls should be dusted, or even washed, and all spider webs, bits of sawdust, old paint flakes and what-have-you should be removed before you crack that can of paint. If paint is flaking, sand it smooth. If it's flaking badly, scrape it, then sand what's left.

Move furniture out of the room if at all possible. If you must keep things in the room, group them together and cover them securely with plastic or tarps. If you try to leave the computer uncovered, you will inevitably pour soapy water into the keyboard. It's practically a law of physics.

3. Don't wing it. We all hate to tape around moldings, ceilings and floors. We all try to paint freehand, with the idea that we can mop up any drips or goofs. We all fail miserably, and have to go back and tape with a partly-painted room. Save yourself the hassle by taping every border before you even start. Also, get heavy tarps and tape them to the floor for the inevitable occurrence of someone tripping over the partly-filled paint can.

4. Light colors may take extra coats when painted over dark ones. If you can, always paint a similar type of paint over the old one, or use a glossier paint. Flat is easily covered by semi-gloss, satin, or enamel. Enamel, on the other hand, is difficult to cover with anything but enamel. If you must cover a higher-gloss paint with a lower-gloss one, sand the original paint first, so the new paint with cling and cover rather than just beading up.

Once you've painted, you may want to consider floor coverings. Rattan, bamboo and sea grass make nice, outdoorsy rugs that feel cool on the feet and lend a touch of the seaside to any room. The dry-grass scent is light, herbal and sensuous. If you want something softer underfoot, hooked rugs from the Canadian Maritimes add brightness and charm in designs of lighthouses, fish, seabirds and colorful houses. For elegant coziness, you may decide on a Persian or Turkish area rug. A rug can change the whole feel of a room, and if it happens to have a gorgeous design, and a soft feel that invites harem-style lounging, what’s the harm in that?

I’m a big fan of most things glass, and when I was watching that show about the loft, I was making mental notes about how I would do things in my (fantasy) loft. One of the things that struck me was the fact that some loft owners create "rooms" by hanging partitions from the twenty-five foot ceilings. I thought it would be fun to create a curtain of shimmering beads hanging from those tall, tall ceilings. I envisioned a woven net of beads (individual strands would get tangled) that could be raised or lowered by means of a draw cord. Having a little time on my hands, I skipped over to www.auntiesbeads.com and checked out the Austrian crystal beads and the Czech glass beads in a million breathtaking colors. I figured I could do the curtain for under a hundred dollars! Now all I need is the loft..

Decorating with Leather

Decorating with Leather

My friend Robert wanted to move in with his sweetheart, and because his place was a studio, they decided to live in her place. Now, Anna is a lovely person inside and out, and she was really happy that her relationship with Robert was moving along at a steady clip. One day, Robert borrowed a truck and they moved him in. He had twenty pairs of Levis, a big stereo and an electric guitar and a huge TV and a big computer set-up, and pretty soon, it was clear to both of them that Anna’s place wasn’t as big as they had initially thought.

But they didn’t want to get a new place because Anna’s rent was amazingly cheap and they figured they’d be moving in a year or so anyway. So Anna, being a lovely person inside as well as out, made room for Robert the best she could. She revamped her closet, threw out a bunch of clothes and added shelves for Robert’s things. She put her make-up vanity in the garage and Robert nailed her magnifying mirror to the bathroom wall so she could still fret over her two invisible lines and yank on her perfect eyebrows once in awhile.

Leather—the Classy Womens Accessory

Leather makes great furniture, but it's also long been considered the best choice for luggage, handbags and other accessories. Aside from being most durable, leather is elegant and acquires a lustrous patina over time: leather bags can be handed down over generations because it lasts and looks wonderful. Wiping leather down with oil from time to time helps it stay moisturized, but beyond that, there's not much worry or when it comes to caring for your leather accessories.

You'll spend more for a leather handbag or tote, but it will wear so well that you won't regret your choice. When leather accessories get old, seams may become worn, but since leather rarely gets torn, you can have stitching repaired with a minimum of fuss. Leather adds panache to the wardrobe and gets you noticed as someone who appreciates quality. For all these reasons and more, leather briefcases and wallets speak of success.

But Robert was still out of his element. You see, Anna had lived in the same place for five years, and she had it fixed up very nicely, for a single woman. Big ole’ Robert with his free weights and large boots and all his guy toys looked silly sitting around on Anna’s fragile, wrought-iron dining-room chairs. I didn’t have the courage to ask how he’d taken to the canopied bed in the ultra-femme bedroom done in baby yellows and pale, mint greens. In the delicate bathroom, the apple-green-striped kitchen, the velvet and silk living-room, Robert just didn’t fit.

So Anna did the only thing she could think of. She bought Robert an ottoman. Not just any ottoman: it is big, big enough for a pair of size-twelve feet and the Times and a man-sized coffee mug. It’s made of rich, dark leather, very masculine. It takes up twenty-five percent of the living-room, but Anna doesn’t care. That ottoman is more than a great piece of furniture, it’s a statement of confidence. It’s also a step in the right direction, which was what Robert needed after losing his bachelor pad and his freedom to eat pizza for breakfast. It’s rough on a guy, coming face-to-face with himself surrounded by pastels and gilt and posies. Anna did just the right thing: she let him know that her home is his home too. Next week, they’re going to start shopping for a matching leather chair.

Basic Stain Removal Tips: Prevent Damage to Carpet and Clothing

Basic Stain Removal Tips: Prevent Damage to Carpet and Clothing

Even if you don’t have children or pets, no one’s perfect. Thus, there will come a time in your life where stain removal or spot treatment tricks will come in handy, even if you try everything you can do to prevent them. Whether your guest spills wine on your ivory carpet or your dog get mud stains on your favorite piece of clothing, knowing how to start cleaning quickly (and properly) is important if you want to remove the stain effectively.

Stains involving blood, grease or wax can be challenging but knowing how to treat the stain can help you save your valuable clothes or furniture. While many products like OxiClean are effective for many stain removal situations, sometimes simple items like laundry detergent, vinegar or bleach are more effective. Use these at home care tips for basic stain removal to get stains out of almost any fabric.

Ink Stain Removal

Ink stains can be some of the most difficult stains to treat and can damage clothing or furniture quickly. If the ink is water based, you may be able to apply water to the stain and blot it clean with a dry cloth. However, if the ink was permanent you may need to apply rubbing alcohol to the stain, fingernail polish on the stain or baking soda (mixed with water).

Pet Stain Removal

There’s nothing worse than dealing with urine pet stains in your home or on your carpet. You may have tried every product offered at your local pet store, but experts claim they are not likely any better than using a solution with half lemon juice and half water on the stains. Not only will the homemade solution remove the stain but will also leave it fresh and odorless.

Rust Stain Removal

Rust stains on clothing can be annoying and bothersome. While stain experts reveal the easiest way to get rid of a rust stain is to treat it with a commercial rust stain remover, they claim that in a pinch you can effectively use lemon juice (citric acid) or white vinegar (acetic acid). Some also claim rhubarb stalks can effectively get rust stains out of clothing. However, for rhubarb to be used you must cut them, boil them and let them sit for 15 minutes after boiling before using the mixture.

Grout Stain Removal

Real estate experts will confirm dirty kitchen or bathroom grout is not only unattractive but it can lower the value of a home and make it almost impossible to sell in many cases. However, while many homeowners are quick to care for carpet stains or clothing stains, they neglect to worry about grout stains. For grout stain removal, be sure to start by cleaning up noticeable debris. Create a solution with one part detergent (laundry detergent is fine) and four parts warm water. Wet the grout with the solution and using a cleaning brush or old toothbrush, scrub the grout area. After the grout has been scrubbed, simply rinse the grout will a cloth or mop.

It’s a great idea to keep these basic stain removal items in your home, in case a stain situation does occur. In most cases, the longer the stain is left alone, the more challenging it will be for you to remove it completely from your carpet, clothing or furniture. So, be prepared for any type of stain and act fast!

Remember—your skin isn't just an envelope that keeps your body together—it's a permeable organ that absorbs and reacts to the things it comes in contact with! When you soak your body in Dead Sea salts, the unique and health-giving minerals of the Dead Sea wash your skin with the same minerals that bring well-being back to people who travel all the way to the region for spa therapy. Skin Conditions that Dead Sea Salts, Mud and Minerals Products May Serve As Healthy Remedies

Skin Conditions that Dead Sea Salts, Mud and Minerals Products May Serve As Healthy Remedies

The minerals from Dead Sea mud have been used throughout history for the treatment of health conditions such as arthritis, acne, psoriasis and eczema, which affect the skin and immune systems of millions of people worldwide. The Dead Sea is 1200 feet below sea level; its unique geographic position creates a climate known nowhere else in the world. Although there are more than 300 sunny days each year and the average temperature is over ninety degrees, it is possible to sunbathe in the waters for hours at a time without the need for sunscreen.

A special atmospheric layer covers the Dead Sea, protecting bathers from harmful rays while inundating them with beneficial minerals, comforting humidity and health-promoting warmth. The humidity is around 35%, and the oxygen content so far below sea level is extra-rich, creating an ideal situation for the treatment of asthma. The lack of pollens and other allergens gives great relief to allergy sufferers, too.

About Dead Sea Essential Salts and Natural Minerals

The salt content from the Dead Sea is around thirty percent—about ten times higher than that of ordinary seawater—and people who visit the area find that the high mineral content combined with a regimen of extended soaking and floating brings them renewal and relief from suffering. Because of the high density of salts in the Dead Sea, the buoyancy of the human body is increased so that visitors can float in the water with no effort at all.

There are strong concentrations of beneficial minerals in Dead Sea products, among them being 12 minerals that are simply not available in other sea-based products. Scientists believe it is these minerals, combined with the unparalleled environment of the Dead Sea region that help restore people to health. Long established as a therapeutic source, the Dead Sea region abounds in spas, treatment centers and hotels where visitors can bathe in public or private in the health-giving waters of the sea.

Since the Dead Sea is located in Israel, many people who would benefit from its healing properties cannot travel to the source; for these people, Dead Sea salt and mineral products can bridge the essential gap between illness and health. Companies that make products from Dead Sea minerals create treatment creams, wraps, mud masks and moisturizers designed to help people benefit from Dead Sea minerals in their own homes.

Skin Care Products with Black Mud Found in the Dead Sea

Black Dead Sea mud is often used as a therapeutic body wrap at spas; facial masks are also made of this miracle substance, to care for the skin, refine the pores, and as a natural anti-aging therapy. For psoriasis treatment, application of Dead Sea mud in combination with baths using Dead Sea salts have brought significant remissions for many patients, and the minerals in Dead Sea salts have also been included in psoriasis creams. Psoriasis flare-ups are less common when patients have experienced Dead Sea treatments. Dead Sea mud has also been found to relieve arthritis pain in joints, perhaps due to the influence of the high mineral content. Soaking in a bath of Dead Sea salts can alleviate muscle soreness; for a homemade, skin softening bath, combine Dead Sea salts with a cupful of oatmeal placed in an old nylon stocking. The minerals soak into your skin and the oatmeal creates a moisture shield that smoothes and softens.

The facts about treating stretch marks include the realization that they fade over time but are rarely eradicated with creams. But moisturized skin helps minimize the appearance of stretch marks, and creams made from Dead Sea minerals help skin regain its youthful moisture. Anti-aging cream isn't just for stretch marks; use it on elbows, heels and even your face.

If you can't visit the Dead Sea, you can still find Dead Sea products designed to care for your skin, muscles, joints and overall well-being.

How to Clean Professional Makeup and Cosmetics Brushes

How to Clean Professional Makeup and Cosmetics Brushes

If you wear makeup, you need to know how to clean makeup brushes. If you don't clean your make up brushes, you'll either wind up spoiling them and throwing them away, or they will mess up your clean, fresh look by changing the colors of your makeup. If you're not sure how to clean makeup brushes, don't worry; it's simple. The main thing is using the right type of cleaner for the kind of cosmetic brush you have. It's also most important to clean your makeup brushes frequently, so that there's very little build up on them.

Applying your make up correctly is at least as important as the quality of the makeup itself. Professional makeup artists take a lot of time smoothing, blending and brushing creams and powders into their clients' soon flawless faces. Great brushes help make perfect makeup possible.

What Materials and Hair Products are Brushes Made of?

Makeup brushes come in all sorts of materials, with the cheapest usually being made of sponge or plastic and the most expensive some sort of animal hair. High quality natural hair brushes used by professional models and painters are made of sable, and if you want a particular brush shape in an excellent quality brush, you can find them at art supply stores. Badger fur, pony hair and even squirrel hair are also used to make brushes. The best makeup, such as mineral makeup, will often come with a set of fine brushes: perfect application gives your makeup a beautiful soft finish.

--Editors Tip ----------------------------------------------------------------------

The Importance of Properly Cleaning Your Makeup Brushes

Properly cleaning your makeup brushes will save you time, money and even your face! You will save time because clean makeup brushes make application easier, so that loose powder goes where you want it instead of clinging to an oily brush. You won't have to makeup as often because your makeup will be fresh—not contaminated with skin oils and old, oxidized colors. You'll save money by cleaning your makeup brushes because they will last longer, so you won't have to buy new ones. And you can save your face—from breakouts associated with bacterial and oil build up on grimy old brushes. Five minutes a week, a little sudsy water, and your makeup brushes will stay fresh and new much longer

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Properly Cleaning Your Cosmetic Brushes Will Make Them Last Longer

Besides letting your brushes last longer (very important if you're going to buy more expensive, smoother brushes), if you know how to clean your make up brushes, you can minimize skin problems such as breakouts from accumulated oils or eye infections from mascara brushes. Hygiene is one reason that experts say never to share your makeup with a friend: you can transmit bacteria on the applicators. Cold sores, acne, rashes and staph germs can move easily from one makeup brush to another, so never borrow someone else's brush or powder puff. In fact, for people who apply makeup using their fingers, it's not even a good idea to wipe your fingers across someone else's blusher or eye shadow, because you're picking up bacteria from their fingers and skin.

How to Wash Your Make up Brushes Free of Bacteria

You can wash your makeup brushes in warm, soapy water, using an antibacterial soap, shampoo or a hand sanitizer. There are also special products for cleaning your makeup brushes. Lipstick brushes may need extra care because of the extra emollients in lip colors, which can make them sticky and hard to wash. Wash them with a gentle oil removing wash you may already use for your skin, and take your time, working out the lipstick from the brush bristles.

Shape brushes while wet and let them dry to preserve their smoothness. Lay them flat instead of standing them on end, or you will damage either the bristles or handle of the brush. Wash them gently, never scrubbing, or the hairs will start to come out. Follow any cleaning instructions that come with your makeup brushes in case they have special requirements. And if you can't make up your mind to commit to cleaning your brushes, you can always buy disposable sponge brushes and throw them away more frequently. Especially if you suffer from very oily skin or acne, make sure you're always using a clean makeup brush to minimize bacterial problems that may increase your skin trouble.

Dirty Makeup Brushes Carry Bacteria and Will Not Give You a Flawless Look

Whatever you do, don't use the same makeup brushes day in and day out without washing them. Aside from harboring bacteria, makeup pigments bind with the oils from your skin, making brushes sticky and dirty. Makeup colors can change, becoming darker or more orange due to oxidation and to mixing with skin oils or dust, making a mess of your daily makeup routine. Clean your brushes once a week to keep them working properly, and if a brush becomes stained or misshapen, throw it out and get a new one.

Beauty Benefits of Goats Milk Based Soaps and Skin Care Products

Beauty Benefits of Goats Milk Based Soaps and Skin Care Products

Milk based soaps have recently been rediscovered, largely due to the current research on milk proteins that is teaching consumers about the way skin benefits from contact with whey protein and lactic acid. Lactic acid helps smooth skin by exfoliation, and milk also contains Vitamins A and D, whose benefits include giving skin strength and suppleness. Many milk based soaps are made of goat's milk, which has the same ph as human skin. Goats produce a high fat, creamy milk that's easily digested because its molecules are smaller than those of cow's milk.

People allergic to cow's milk often drink goat's milk instead because of the protein profile of goat's milk, which more closely resembles that of human milk, and which makes goat milk easier to digest. The other upside of using goats' milk in all kind of products is the fact that goats are more easily farmed than cows or sheep: they forage on all kinds of feed, are resistant to injury and disease and are providers of wool, meat and milk.

How is goat’s milk soap made?

But you can't make soap from milk alone. Other ingredients could include natural oils from seeds, nuts, and vegetables, such as soybeans or coconuts. Soap has two main ingredients; lye and fat. When lye combines with a fat, chemical interaction hardens the oils, creating a bar of hard soap. When our great-grandmothers made their all natural soap, they used wood ashes and lard: the ashes were soaked in water, which leached out lye. Cooking lard with lye created soap. Original lye soaps were unscented and very harsh. They were also used for scrubbing laundry and floors, so their harshness helped pioneers get their clothes and homes—as well as their families—clean.

Why soap making is usually left to professional crafters

Today, you can make your own soap much more easily than the pioneers did. Buy soapmaking ingredients online, at some craft stores, or at co-ops and natural food stores. Lye is a caustic agent though, and you have to be careful when using it because when it's undiluted, it can eat holes in your skin as easily as it can destroy your clothes. There are rules for working with lye; never make lye-based soaps as a fun craft for children; it's just too dangerous. But once lye combines with fats and saponification takes place, it's no longer the caustic agent it started out as. If you aren’t crafty, but still want access to milk based soaps, there are many online retailers online that sell this wonderful soap.

If you want to try soapmaking at home but don't want to deal with lye, the easiest, gentlest soap in the world can be made with three ingredients; glycerin, water and scent. Glycerin is derived from fat, either animal or vegetable and can be bought in blocks or chips at any place that sells soapmaking supplies. Melt glycerin on the stove over a low temperature, add essential or fragrance oils for scent or food coloring for hue, then pour the liquid into soap molds. When the soap is cooled, simply unmold it.

What ingredients, like scent and exfoliants, are added to homemade milk soap?

Aromatherapy soaps include natural and organic scents such as lavender, vanilla, and rose oils. For aromatherapy purposes, only buy soaps scented with organic essential oils; "fragrance" oils are based on synthetic chemicals and don't have the beneficial neurological properties of essential oils.

Adding ingredients like goat's milk to a soap base as a liquid ingredient allows the beneficial properties of the milk to become part of the cleanser. You can use regular or powdered milk in soapmaking. (For a classic milk bath without soapmaking, add a cup or two of milk powder to hot water and climb in for a skin-smoothing soak). Other healthy ingredients include oils like olive oil, almonds, oatmeal, honey, herbal ingredients, vitamins and exfoliants like cornmeal or coffee grounds. Soaps of synthetic glycerin and organic soy milk or soy protein are a vegan bathing delight. There are recipes for therapeutic use, acne prevention and sensitive complexion and body care. Homemade soap makes a marvelous gift, too!
